The Marble Race concept, developed for Ladbrokes, relies on precise technical mechanics: a real marble race unfolding on an 18-meter-long physical track. To tie into the World Cup 2026 theme, the client wanted to evolve this format to offer a completely new visual experience to its users.

To bring this hybrid project to life, Dreamwall was commissioned to fully design the backdrop for this competition. This mission mobilized both our Creative Department and our Technical Team. The core challenge of this virtual production was orchestrating a coherent and realistic fusion between a tangible installation and a real-time generated digital universe, where our artists' work takes precedence over the software tool.

How Does the Creative Department Use Detail to Build Realism?

The visual overhaul of Marble Race required going far beyond simply rendering a football stadium. The goal was to design a credible environment around the track, delivering high visual depth capable of hosting and perfectly integrating the physical marble within the virtual scene. Our Creative Department focused its efforts on art direction and the precision of modeled details.

A Thematic Journey Across Seven Key Stages

To ensure total immersion, our 3D Designers broke the track down into seven distinct narrative zones. The physical circuit now cuts through virtual spaces meticulously designed down to the smallest detail:

  • The Kick-Off: The race begins on the outskirts of the stadium, lined with flags sporting the colors of the competing teams. Our teams recreated parking areas and food truck zones to set the pre-match atmosphere.
  • Behind the Scenes: The track then dives into the internal infrastructure: players' locker rooms and training pitches have been modeled in keeping with the typical architecture of these venues.
  • The Wall of Fame: An exhibition zone showcases historic trophies. Meticulous work was carried out on materials (shaders) to accurately reflect light on the cups and display cases.
  • The Immersive Stadium: The heart of the track lies inside the stadium, engineered to convey a monumental sense of scale. A modeled and animated virtual crowd densifies the stands.
  • The Podium: The environment concludes with an institutional structure dedicated to the award ceremony for the three winning marbles.

Dynamic Lighting: How Do You Seamlessly Integrate a Physical Marble?

The accuracy of a virtual scene depends heavily on lighting management. To guarantee a perfect integration of the physical marble into the 3D environment, the creative team developed an evolving lighting setup.

The system offers realistic daytime lighting that automatically switches to a night-match atmosphere from 6 PM onwards. This night version required absolute rigor in light source placement. Stadium floodlights, booth lighting, and lampposts alter the perception of the scene: the backdrop takes on a completely new visual twist while preserving its high level of detail. The light sources enhance the architectural volumes observed during the day, ensuring the race remains perfectly legible while capturing the electric atmosphere unique to big night matches.

Organic Movement: When the Backdrop Comes to Life

For hybrid integration to work smoothly, the digital backdrop cannot remain completely static. Our 3D designers pushed the realism of the virtual scene by working on organic elements, specifically simulating the behavior of vegetation.

Under the effect of the wind, the branches and leaves of the trees lining the track move fluidly. This dedication to micro-details breathes life into the overall environment, giving the spectator the distinct feeling that the race is unfolding in a truly physical space.

Dynamic and Customizable Graphic Overlays

Beyond the spatial layout, player immersion relies on the visual density of the dynamic graphic overlays. The creative teams developed a system of parametric textures, allowing the appearance of certain environmental elements to change based on real-time race data.

In the stands, animated tifos deploy dynamically. Furthermore, the jerseys worn by the virtual crowd incorporate parameters directly controlled by the client. Before the races launch, the user can select the color codes of the participating countries. The system designed by Dreamwall instantly applies these hues to the environment's textures, ensuring the backdrop is always relevant to the current race's theme.

Technical Team Challenges: Real-Time Integration

While the Creative Department shaped the visual aspect of the race, the execution and stability of this project rested on the engineering of our Technical Team. The main challenge was synchronizing this rich 3D environment with the physical behavior of the marbles on the 18-meter track.

How to Synchronize an 18-Meter Physical Track with 3D?

Integrating the backdrop around the physical track required a strict calibration process. The circuit is equipped with 14 real cameras. Dreamwall's Technical Direction aligned the spatial coordinates of the tangible installation with those of the virtual environment, developed under Unreal Engine 5.7.

Each physical camera has its virtual alter ego. Shot triggering is governed by a network of sensors detecting the marbles' progress. Our developers structured the communication protocols so that this data triggers, without any latency, the camera cuts and movements within the 3D rendering engine.

Continuous Automation and Broadcast Optimization

Marble Race comes with a heavy operational constraint: races chain together every three minutes, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is zero human intervention during the live broadcast.

Dreamwall's technical team optimized the rendering pipeline to guarantee absolute stability despite the complexity of the night lighting and organic animations (wind, crowd). Additionally, the custom software architecture enables an instant switch between the standard race environment and this new World Cup environment, completely eliminating loading times for the operator.

The success of a hybrid virtual production project on this scale depends heavily on transparent communication with the sponsor. During the integration phase, Dreamwall worked in close collaboration with Ladbrokes' IT teams to interface the graphic elements with the client's data streams (live betting feeds).

This process was punctuated by methodical setup phases and User Acceptance Testing (UAT). This rigorous step validated the responsiveness of the dynamic overlays, the day/night switch, and the robustness of the automation before the product went live.
