A new experience at Monaco's Oceanographic Museum: raising awareness for better protection

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco has enhanced its visitor experience with a new immersive installation. Developed in collaboration with Dreamwall and Hovertone, this interactive journey is designed to raise awareness about the crucial actions needed to protect marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean. Through interaction, visitors can witness the positive impact of their efforts on marine ecosystems and understand the importance of their personal commitment.
Immerse Yourself in Marine Ecosystems
The installation features four interactive projections. Three of them illustrate different marine ecosystems, which evolve in response to visitors’ actions. By stepping on luminous dots projected on the floor, guests can observe in real time how their engagement leads to the restoration of biodiversity: the gradual reappearance of lush marine flora and fauna signals healthier MPAs.
A fourth projection enhances the experience by inviting personal involvement. Scanning a QR code allows visitors to project their own silhouettes as bubbles on the screen—attracting schools of fish that react playfully to their presence.
A Technical and Scientific Challenge
A key challenge in this project was to accurately depict marine biodiversity, a goal achieved in close collaboration with a museum biologist. Ensuring realistic cohabitation between species and animating the totem animal to respond dynamically to visitor interaction required meticulous attention to detail. Another major feat was integrating a system enabling fish to react to "cloud points" generated by detection cameras.
A fusion of technical expertise and creativity
Dreamwall led the artistic development of the MPAs, while Hovertone was in charge of the interactive floor system and overall room scenography. Close coordination between the two teams was vital to ensure a seamless experience where visitors' actions are reflected with perfect coherence in the projected environments.
A promising start
Launched to the public on March 29, the installation has already received enthusiastic feedback. Both entertaining and educational, the experience aligns perfectly with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco’s mission: to inspire deeper understanding and stronger protection of the ocean.
